New Harbor 28
A half-century-old, classic design from John Alden has been re-imagined at Front Street Shipyard. The New Harbor 28 is a Downeast-style dayboat based on the long-popular Wasque 26. With the first hull launching in fall 2023, this new semi-custom production boat is now available as a turnkey, finished vessel or as a hull-and-deck kit for buyers to fit out themselves.
The New Harbor 28 line is an undertaking by entrepreneur Ed Sutt who was a longtime fan of the original Wasque. After purchasing the Wasque molds, Sutt teamed up with designer Geoff Van Gorkom to stretch out the hull by two feet in order to nix the inboard engine and add one or two outboards, offering more space and flexibility.
By opening up the cockpit, there are a variety of potential configurations. The built-in rear bench seat provides for comfortable cruising with friends and family, along with plenty of storage space. The helm station is surrounded by a traditional teak windshield.
Overnighting is comfortable with a cozy vee-berth, sink, and head in the cabin. A large opening hatch provides for excellent ventilation.
Expect to go exploring with the New Harbor 28. The extended range is about 9 knots with the ability to reach 30 knots with a 300-HP outboard. With a shoal draft, she can easily anchor in secluded coves and gunkholes.
Out of the water, the New Harbor 28 is ready for travel as well. With a beam of 8′ 6″, it’s easily trailerable for owners who want to transport it between their winter and summer homes.
